No one will argue with you that there are corrupt people in religion (any religion) just like there are in any other facet of life. It’s too bad that most Christians are unable to follow what Jesus actually preached. In fact, he said:

My point is that humans will fall short of what we preach and then find fault in others for doing the same thing. You can’t let hypocrisy keep you away from the freedom God gives you. Do you let hypocrisy keep you away from Starbucks, the movies, buying an Apple product, or anything else?
You mentioned that religion tries to hold people back. I don’t see that. Yes, some people will tell you “thou art sinful” but in reality, Jesus was found serving hookers, thieves, tax collectors, and other people who would be shunned by religious do-gooders today. Jesus helped set people free of their pasts and addictions and helped them move on with life. He still does today – he does not hold anyone back.
